Blue Barite Digs

Dig Your Own at Hartsel Blue Barite Mine

Unearth Colorado’s Hidden Gemstones

Welcome to the heart of South Park rockhounding! The Bayou Salado Trading Post controls exclusive access to one of the most famous mineral deposits in the West.  Known worldwide for its sharp, blade-like shapes and striking sky-blue color, Hartsel Blue Barite Mine is a holy grail find for rock collectors and crystal lovers alike.  Whether you are a seasoned geologist or a family looking for a unique Colorado outdoor adventure, you can sign up at our shop, grab your tools, and head out to find your own treasures.

STEP 1: Check-In at the Post

All diggers must stop by the Bayou Salado Trading Post first. You will fill out a standard safety waiver, pay your per-person digging fee, and get your official map to the claim.  If paying online, present your receipt to a staff member.

STEP 2: Head to the Claim

The dig site is located just a short drive from our shop. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, but standard cars can make it to the parking area with careful driving. A map with directions will be provided.

STEP 3: Keep What You Find

Spend the day digging through the soft clay layers. Every beautiful blue crystal you pull from the earth is yours to take home (limited to 20lbs).

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at bayousaladotradingpost@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

An all day pass is only $10 per adult/child.

Yes!  We accept all major credit cards through Paypal (below).  Please print your receipt and show to a staff member at the shop.  You will need to sign a waiver (can be printed here) - have it filled out for each participant and bring with you to shop to receive your official map to the claim and any additional instructions.

Yes, we offer group discounts!  Whether you're planning a family outing, rockhounding club trip, school group, or other organized event, please contact us in advance to discuss group rates and arrangements.  The rate is approximately $50/group.

No experience is required. The barite crystals are found in relatively soft clay layers, making this a fun and accessible activity for beginners, hobbyists, and families alike.  Children of any age are absolutely welcome but must be supervised by an adult at all times.

This specific site is world-famous among collectors for producing distinct, blade-like crystal clusters with a unique, pale sky-blue hue that is highly sought after in the mineral community.

A 4WD vehicle is not strictly required, but high-clearance vehicles are highly recommended.  The dirt roads leading to the claim can become rugged, rutted, or muddy depending on recent mountain weather.

Yes. Your surface digging fee covers all the personal mineral specimens you dig up and harvest during your visit.  There is a 20 pound limit on the amount of rock or material a participant may remove and take with them.  Commercial mining or heavy mechanized equipment is strictly prohibited.

We recommend leaving pets at home. The high-altitude sun, sharp rocks, and lack of shade can be hazardous for animals, and pets must never be left unattended in vehicles.

Digs are weather dependent.  Summer thunderstorms can roll in quickly in South Park.  The clay at the site turns into sticky mud when wet, so if there is heavy rain or lightning in the area we recommend packing up for the day for your safety.  Heavy snow, frozen ground, or severe spring mud will close the claim.  Always call ahead to check current digging conditions (719)836-2458.

The rock-hounding site is a natural, undeveloped area with no restrooms or other developed facilities. There are no trash cans so please pack out all trash.  Please bring water, snacks, sunscreen, appropriate clothing, and your digging tools.

  • Tools: Hand trowels, small rock picks, screwdrivers (for gently prying crystals), buckets - we have shovels & other items available at the store that you can borrow or purchase.
  • Safety: Sturdy closed-toe boots, heavy-duty work gloves, and protective safety glasses.
  • Sun & Weather: High-SPF sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, and plenty of drinking water.
  • Packing: Old newspapers, tissue paper, or egg cartons to wrap your delicate barite crystals safely for the ride home.
